Tapping Your Way To Fearless Public Speaking

Liliana Venegas Rogers Blog

Hola Beautiful,
Today I want to share with you how to tap your way to fearless public speaking.

Almost two years ago I decided that waiting 25 years to fulfill a dream was long enough and I wouldn’t let excuses and FEAR get in my way any longer…. Time was up… I went ahead and bought a Groupon for skydiving; the only problem is that I was VERY scared of heights.

Fortunately, I’m no dummy, and I like things as easy as possible. Therefore, two days before my jump I asked a friend if she would do an EFT session on me for my fear of heights. She very kindly did (thank you Irena) and my fear of heights went from a 9 to a 2 in just one session!! I was able to enjoy my jump!! I’m a believer!!

Now, I want to share this technique with you. The beauty of it is that you don’t need a professional to perform it on you. Once you understand it and know the basics you can use it on yourself or anybody else for a variety of issues, from fear of public speaking to bad childhood memories.

First, let me tell you what it is, why it works, how it works and then we will put it all together. Sound good?

Tapping or EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) was developed in the 1990s by Stanford University engineer Gary Craig. It involves recalling an unpleasant memory while simultaneously pressing on a series of acupressure points.

Neuroscientists have demonstrated that every memory is encoded in the brain with an emotional charge. This charge creates a neural pathway to signal appropriate physiological response when reminded of the experience or encounter a similar one.

In my case, my fear of heights was a result of a scary bungee jumping experience in Colombia when I was in my twenties. Since then, ANY idea of being up high would trigger a fear of heights.

Tapping or EFT can help rewire these neural pathways. Whenever you think about a stressful situation, the brain activates an alarm response in the amygdala, the part of the system that govern emotions. Stimulating acupressure points reduce the arousal in the amygdala. These opposing signals quickly communicate to the brain that there is no danger and reprogram the circuitry, so the trigger no longer evokes anxiety, fear or other negative emotions.

Tapping or EFT was proving to be very effective to treat several conditions form depression to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).

Tapping Points To Be Fearless

EFT is very simple, includes three main steps:

First, identify the fear or memory you want to work on and determine the intensity in a scale from 0 to 10.

Here, we are going to use fear of public speaking.

Second step is to reverse self-defeating thoughts; most people have some underlying objection to overcoming their trouble emotion. These subconscious thoughts trigger what therapist refers to as psychological reversal – which is a polarity of desires in the energy system. The solution? A simple affirmation. Just fill the blank with you trouble situation, in this case fear of public speaking.

Even though I have this fear of public speaking, I deeply and completely accept myself. Repeat it three times while tapping the fleshy part of the top of your hand or karate point.

Third step is using your index and middle fingers to tap on eight energy meridians in your body while you state the fear you are working on. You tap 7 to 8 times at each tapping point using one or two hands, it doesn’t matter.

Begin by tapping at the top of the head while you state your fear. The words are not as important as the emotion, allow yourself to fully feel the emotion you are naming. Tap the next point, the eye brow point while you state your fear again.

Continue tapping on each point (side of the eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone, under arm) while stating your fear. Tapping on all eight points is called a ‘round’.

Complete at least two rounds before you evaluate again the intensity in a scale of 0 to 10. If it is over 2 you can do more rounds. If the emotion didn’t change, evaluate if you are being open to the experience and really allowing yourself to feel the emotion.

Now let’s put it all together.

For simplicity I’m using the following abbreviations:

Tapping Points To Be Fearless KC      Karate chop point SE      Side eye UM     Under mouth
TH      Top of the head UE      Under eye CB      Collar bone
EB      Eye brow UN     Under nose UA      Under arm

Remember, this is just an example and you can adjust it to your personal situation.

First, rate the intensity of your fear in the scale of 0 to 10.

Next, read out loud as you tap on each point. Remember to allow yourself to feel.

(KC)   Even though I have this fear of public speaking, I deeply and completely accept myself.
